Generating Oracle Cloud BI Report without Column headers using the eText template

By November 13, 2019 November 20th, 2019 Blog, Oracle Cloud

Sometimes the customer has a requirement to generate a BI report without column headers. To cater to this requirement, we can create a report using the eText template and upload it in the same way as we do for RTF (Rich Text Format) based report.

An eText template is an RTF based template which is used to generate text outputs. At runtime, BI Publisher applies this template to an input XML data file to create an output text file.

There are 2 types of eText template:

  • FIXED_POSITION_BASED: FIXED_POSITION_BASED templates are used for fixed-length record formats, such as EFTs (Electronic Funds Transfer).
  • Delimiter_Based: Designated delimiters are used to separate the data fields. If a field is empty, two delimiters will appear next to each other

Let’s create a report which will give comma separated value rows and report file will not have column headers. So, we have to use the delimiter based eText template while creating a report.

The final report will be like below screenshot:

Below steps are used to create eText template based Report:

1: Go to Navigator>>Reports and Analytics

2: Click On Browse Catalog:

3: Create a custom folder at the designated location. In this case, a ‘Sample Report’ folder is a custom folder.

4: Click on New >> Data model

5: Click on ‘+’ then select SQL Query

6: Input required details in ‘Name’, ’Data Source’ and ‘Type Of SQL’ and then Save ‘Data Model’ in ‘Sample Report’ Folder.

7: Extract sample XML file by clicking on ‘Export’ as highlighted in the screenshot

8: Create an eText template in a similar way as we create RTF based template. In this case, we have used a delimiter based template.

9: Upload XML file as given in the screenshot

10: Go to Data Model’>>Data. Click on ‘Save As Sample Data’ and then click on ‘Create Report’

11: Click On Cancel

12: Select Data Model for the Report

13: Click on ‘Upload’, it will popup ‘Upload template File’. Provide details as given below screenshot and then click on ‘Upload’.

14: Click on ‘Save’ to save the report in the designated folder.

15: Click On ‘View report’ to see report output.
